We Hosted Picnic Style Garden Birthday

Sharing is caring!

For my daughter’s 4th birthday, we were staying at my in-laws’ place, and they have a beautiful big lawn. So I thought, why not host a cozy, picnic-style birthday right there with just close family and enjoy a relaxed, old-school day outdoors? The idea of spending the afternoon on the lawn with a laid-back vibe felt so special (plus, aesthetic picnics were all over my Insta feed).
This post is all about the day we created, our little garden birthday picnic, along with tips, ideas, and inspiration to help you plan something similar.

A Peek Into Garden Birthday

A garden-themed birthday party is like creating a party space inspired by nature. You can either take your party to the garden or replicate the key nature elements of the garden into birthday decor to create a cozy, colorful nature reflection at home. If you have outdoor space like a backyard or community garden accessible for a party, you must surely try this theme for guests to have a fun-filled time in nature away from gadgets.

Let’s dive into things that we did to make a fun party.

How We Set the Party on the Lawn

For the party, although we wanted to keep it just family and picnic style, we had to make it special with some birthday decor to make my daughter feel a special day. So here are some things we did, along with some ideas.

  • The first step was defining the party area and making the space feel festive. We started by outlining the space with lots of potted plants; we went for a mix of floral blooms and greens. (Don’t worry if you don’t have many real ones; fake plants blend right in and look great in photos.)
  • Choosing the color palette early on made it easy to pull everything together. We went for soft pastels. You can also go for something bright and playful colors. Just pick a few shades and stick with them for a cohesive tone.
  • To give the space a magical glow, we strung lights around the party area. If you’re hosting in the evening, this is a must: the warm twinkle makes everything feel special and serene.
  • At the entrance, there was a trellis arch. We made it a bit more green by adding fake vines, and some flowers for the perfect “welcome” for little guests (and lovely for photos too).
  • Inspired by the garden theme, we hung paper butterflies and bees from the trees with pretty ribbons, which looked like they were fluttering above the picnic blankets. For our path to the party area, flower petals on the ground (with a few extra potted blooms along the edges) led the way, making the entrance feel magical and inviting.
  • We added a few sun catchers to the branches; they looked so pretty, and everyone loved them. You can also go for wind chimes and pinwheel flowers, either in vases or tucked into the lawn to make the space more fun.
  • You can also add a big “Welcome to the Garden” sign to greet everyone at the entrance. while.
  • We hung some paper lanterns on the patio for a soft glow in the evening.
  • We had placed a few tables along the edge to keep food and other supplies. We draped faux green vines along the edges of the tables, making the whole space feel lush.

A Sweet Photo Spot

We did not make a photobooth as the trellis itself was doing the job, but in case you do not have similar options, here are some ideas that can work.

  • Pick a nice spot in the garden or at the entrance of your gate. It can be a big tree, a fence, or even a bush with flowers.
  • Hang a bedsheet, curtain, or colorful cloth as the backdrop.
  • Next, decorate it with balloons, paper flowers, or fairy lights to make it pop.
  • You can also add a banner that says something like “Smile” or “Birthday Fun” to make it extra cute.
  • Arrange some props on a table next to it, like sunglasses, funny hats, and flower crowns.
  • You can also go for a complete floral photo booth by making it entirely with flowers.
  • You can also arch a trellis or any other shape and hang flower plants with some added decor like fairy lights, or butterfly or bee cutouts.

Budget-Friendly DIY Touches

Although we kept the decor minimal, here are a few quick DIYs that we tried and a few suggestions.

  • We decorate mason jars with twine and fill them with small flowers to create rustic centerpieces.
  • Next to the sitting area, we placed the watering can filled with flowers for a rustic, garden vibe.
  • You can create DIY garden-themed signs (like “Flower Field” or “Butterfly Garden”) using cardboard, paint, and stencils.
  • You can also make paper flower garlands to decorate the space.

Soft Balloons Decor

I wanted the balloons to add just a subtle pop of fun without taking over the laid-back, garden vibe. I wanted to include balloons only because my daughter is obsessed with balloons even now. We gently blend balloons into the garden vibe.

  • We just used pastel color balloons and made an arch of them and hung some fake vines from the arch to make it look like it is falling from the balloons, and added a few fake flowers.
  • Near the play area, we hung balloons from tree branches above the party area to create a “balloon ceiling.” It looked too good.
  • You can also make balloon bouquets using 3-5 small balloons of the same color and a yellow or brown balloon in the center tied together to look like a flower.
  • You can also use flower, bees, or butterfly-shaped balloons, or twist noodle balloons to make flowers.
  • You can also make a rainbow arch with different color balloons.

What We Served at Our Picnic Birthday

When I imagined this birthday, I wanted everyone, big and little, to feel free to lounge, nibble, and just enjoy the afternoon. So, I focused on crowd-pleasing, fuss-free picnic food that’s easy to pick up, munch, and share while sprawled on blankets and gathered around low tables. Here is everything we served.

Mini Sandwiches & Wraps: Thanks to all the help from family, we made a big platter of finger sandwiches. A mix of egg salad, coleslaw, hummus, and veggie sandwiches, and P& J so that everyone can find something they like. And some simple chicken wraps cut into pinwheels.

Sliders: A Few pulled beef sliders with cheese.

Fresh Fruit: We set out bowls of strawberries, watermelon, and grapes with some flavored yogurt and chopped nuts.

Veggie Sticks & Dips: Carrot, cucumber, and bell pepper sticks with some hummus.

Brownies: We wrapped up homemade brownies in parchment for an easy grab.

Lemonade: We filled a big dispenser with lemonade and added a few fresh mint leaves inside. It felt very refreshing to drink.

Iced Tea: We got some iced teas in lemon and peach flavors for the grown-ups.

Juice Boxes: Simple juice boxes for individual serving were good for those who do not want lemonade or iced tea.

Our Picnic Food Table Setup

For our picnic dining spot, I used a low table and a few wooden crates side-by-side with a board on top. And added a classic checkered gingham table cover.in red and white.

Around the table, I spread the rugs and scattered a mix of oversized cushions, floor pillows. And a burlap runner for added texture.

For centerpieces, I used the DIY mason jars filled with wildflowers. Next, I arranged plates each with a simple linen napkin, rolled and tied with twine and a snip of rosemary.

We kept food on a separate table for a buffet-style eating. I used a neutral linen tablecloth layered with a second gingham runner for visual interest.

I arranged everything on wooden boards, enamel trays, and baskets lined with cloth napkins for the farm-style picnic vibe.

On a separate table, we set the drink station with juice boxes and iced teas in separate baskets and lemonade in a glass dispenser, with glasses, straws, and napkins next to it.

Games That Help Explore Nature

I wanted everyone to have a real little adventure, nature style, so we played:

Garden Scavenger Hunt: I came up with a garden scavenger hunt, based on all things nature that could be found in my in-laws’ yard. A day before the party, I walked around and made a list of fun things to find, like a purple flower, a shiny pebble, something that smells nice, a feather, and different-shaped leaves. I made copies of the list and tucked tiny baskets for everyone to collect.

Nature Bingo: I got copies of these nature bingo cards. And gave to each guest along with a pencil. When the game started, everyone was running around and searching in the bushes to find items. Whoever can spot five in a row first wins. You can do something similar

Thoughtful Return Gifts

Since we had a few guests who were close family. I wanted the return gift to be something nice. So we made a hamper with small clay pots with a paint kit, a mix of flower and herb kit packets, and a personalized garden hat.

But you can gift some simple gifts as well. Either an individual item or a bunch as a hamper. Here are some ideas.

  • Cute terra cotta pots.
  • Nature Journal
  • Colorful, small water can
  • Mini gardening kit

What Everyone Wore & You Can Try Too

I wanted my daughter to feel extra special but free to run, play, and twirl in the grass. So I got her a sweet, short jumpsuit in lilac with little floral prints paired with a sunhat.

Others wore picnic-style outfits like soft cotton dresses, linen shirts, shorts, and wide-brimmed hats to keep the sun off.

Here are some outfit ideas that you can try at your party.

  • For the guest of honour, you can choose a dress as simple as any outfit with floral elements or garden elements, and add a flower crown or a bee costume for a cute twist.
  • You can also accessorise them with glower, butterfly, bee-shaped clips, headband.

Simple Invitation Ideas

Since it was a close family party, we just informed everyone over the phone, but you can make some fun invites. Below are some ideas that can make a good invitation choice.

  • Make invitations with colored paper shaped like flowers or a bee.
  • You also send digital invites in a bright, pastel background featuring garden elements like flowers and butterflies.
  • Use a playful text to blend it with the theme, like “Come join us in the garden for a blooming good time.”
  • You can also make an invitation video with a cute garden illustration, like a watering can or a flower blooming.

Here are some learning from the party

  • This theme worked perfectly for a cozy, family time birthday; everyone enjoyed a unique picnic-style time compared to the regular birthdays.
  • One mistake I made was setting up the food table in a sunny spot. It was fine in the morning, but by afternoon the sun had shifted, and we had to move everything to a shaded area. You should definitely keep this in mind for outdoor setups
  • Everyone enjoyed nature-style games; it was a refreshing change for them.
  • The classic picnic-style food made everyone feel nostalgic, but it would have been better if I had included chips or nachos for casual munching during the chit-chat time.

Hey Mom, if you are looking for something different for the next birthday party, make sure to give this theme a try. It takes you back to the old picnic style time and is sure for a quality time. And it is perfect for spring or early summer.
