fun games for kids

Hot Potato

We played this game at her last birthday party, and it was fun. You can use this as a last-minute, backup game plan. But if you are having a time crunch and other options, you can skip it. Everyone sits in a circle and passes a soft ball or stuffed toy while music plays. When the music stops, the player holding the item is out. Keep going until one player remains. It’s a fast-paced and exciting game.

Musical Chairs

Set up one less chair than the number of people playing. Play music while they walk around the chairs. When the music stops, everyone must find a seat. The player without a chair is out. Remove one chair and keep playing until one player is left. This game is great for keeping everyone active.

Pin the Tail on the Donkey

This game is another fun game that everyone enjoys. We gave it a fun twist to pin the tail at here recent mermaid birthday party. Hang a picture of a donkey on the wall. Give each player a paper tail with tape. Blindfold one player at a time, spin them gently, and let them try to pin the tail on the donkey. The player who gets closest to the correct spot wins.

Freeze Dance

This one is my daughter’s favorite, and we must have this game at every party. To customize it to the party theme, we play songs that are relevant to the theme. Even others enjoy it. It is one of the best games to play at a party with no supplies required. You just need to make a playlist. Play music and let everyone dance freely. When the music stops, they must freeze in place. Anyone who moves is out. Keep playing until one dancer is left.

Treasure Search

Hide small toys or treats around the yard or house. Give players clues or a simple map to help them find the hidden treasures. The player who finds the most items wins. This game encourages teamwork and problem-solving.

Feather Float

Give each player a feather (or a lightweight tissue). When the game starts, they must blow it in the air and keep it in the air by blowing on it for as long as possible. Whoever manages to keep it floating last wins the game.

Mystery Box Guessing Game

We played this game at my nephew’s soccer-themed party. We placed different objects inside a box. Players take turns reaching in and guessing what they are touching. You must use objects with different textures, like a soft toy, a wooden spoon, or a rubber ball. The player with the most correct guesses wins. You can also place the objects relevant to the theme. We placed things like a whistle, a shoe lace, etc.

Balloon Waddle Race

This is very funny to watch; each player holds a balloon between their knees and waddles to the finish line without dropping the balloon. If it falls, they have to go back to the start again. Whoever reaches the finish line first wins.

Donut on a String

Tie donuts to a string and hang them at mouth level. Players must eat the donut without using their hands. The first one to finish their donut wins. It’s a fun challenge and a tasty treat. When we played this game, everyone was more excited to eat the donut, I guess. But it was fun for us to watch them, and the parents kept prompting them on how to do it.

Wacky Dress-Up Relay

Create a pile of silly clothes like hats, scarves, and big shoes. Players take turns running to the pile, putting on one item, and racing back to tag the next teammate. The team that finishes dressing up first wins.

Pass the Water Overhead

Make all the players stand in a line holding an empty cup over their heads. The first player will have the cup filled with water, and needs to pass the water from the cup to the cup of the other person’s head without turning. The goal is to fill the last player’s cup. It will surely get everyone covered in water.

Find Treasure in Ice

Freeze small toys inside ice cubes. Give each player a cup of warm water and a spoon. They must melt the ice to free their toy. This game is fun on a hot day.

Shadow Tag

Instead of a regular tag, Players must step on each other’s shadows to tag them. It’s a fun twist on a classic game and works well when the sun is shining.

Giant Bubble Pop

Make a large batch of bubble solution. One player blows big bubbles while the others try to pop them before they hit the ground. This game is great for outdoor fun.

Rainbow Splash Art

Set up a large piece of paper on the ground. Give everyone different color paint-filled squeeze bottles and let them have fun by squeezing colors on the paper to create a colorful masterpiece. It’s both a game and an art activity.

Cup Balance Relay

Each player balances a plastic cup filled with water on their head while walking across the yard. The player who reaches the finish line without spilling wins.

Superhero Training Course

Create an obstacle course with hoops to jump through, ropes to crawl under, and cones to run around. Players complete the course and feel like superheroes.

Lava Island

Place mats around the yard. Players must jump from one to another without touching the ground, pretending the floor is lava. The last one standing wins.

Animal Walk Relay

Players must move like different animals to reach the finish line. For each tag, we assigned an animal, and when the next person runs, they must run like that animal to finish the race or tag the person. We asked them to hop like a bunny, waddle like a duck, or crawl like a crab. It was so fun to watch them racing in such a funny way, and they enjoyed it too. It’s great if you are hosting an animal-themed party.

Upside-Down Race

Players wear shirts or jackets backward with their hands inside and try to run a short race. It makes for silly fun as they struggle to move in their unusual outfits.

Give everyone a series of clues that lead them around the house or yard. Each clue brings them closer to solving a mystery or finding a hidden treasure. Here are some ideas to help you plan.
